Court: No deferrals for Olmert's hearing
27.05.2009
The High Court of Justice on Wednesday severely criticized former prime minister Ehud Olmert's lawyers for trying to postpone the hearing that Olmert is required to undergo before trial proceedings can be opened against him in multiple corruption cases.
According to Olmert's lawyers, the hearing must be postponed because of the operation the former prime minister is scheduled to undergo.
"I was appalled to discover that while other appeals submitted to the Supreme Court are backlogged until the end of 2009 we have to occupy ourselves with this nonsense," Judge Edmond Levy said.
Olmert's lawyers had requested that the hearing, which Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz had proposed should end by mid-August, be rescheduled to end on September 17, the eve of Rosh Hashanah.
"The attorney-general's proposal is fair," Justice Miriam Naor said. "There is no basis for your demands."
"There is no cause for the appeal by Olmert's lawyers," said Dana Briskman, the Attorney-General's Office representative at the deliberation on Wednesday. "The attorney-general has already gone out of his way to accommodate Olmert.
"This is an attempt to stall the [proceedings] indefinitely. The attorney-general has agreed to postpone the hearing until mid-August, but when they receive a deferral, they want more. We must put an end to this," she said.
Olmert's lawyers withdrew their appeal after they were recommended to do so by the three-judge panel.
