Palestinians, activists, settlers clash
30.05.2009
Palestinians and Left-wing activists demonstrating near Bat Ayin on Saturday scuffled with settlers from the area, Israel Radio reported.
According to the report, at least 20 demonstrators were approached by settlers when an argument broke out and both sides began throwing stones. Three Palestinians and two activists were arrested following the fight.
On Friday, two border police officers were lightly injured during violent protests in the West Bank.
The officers were wounded when Palestinians and activists taking part in weekly demonstrations against the security barrier near the Arab villages of Bil'in and Ni'ilin began to throw rocks at security forces in the area.
The troops responded by firing tear gas canisters, according to Army Radio.
The activists were protesting against the route of the fence, which separates the villagers from much of their agricultural land.
The injuries come in the wake of talk in the security establishment of reviewing the standard procedures for dispersing such protests, following a series of injuries and fatalities. IDF sources note that the army has always made a distinction between 'direct fire' of the canisters at specific demonstrators as opposed to 'indirect fire' in the nearby vicinity.
