Jewish gunman kills Arab, wounds another in Jerusalem
02.06.2009
A Jewish gunman shot dead an Arab man and seriously wounded another individual in an apparent shooting spree in central Jerusalem on Tuesday, police said.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said investigators were considering all motives, including nationalistic.
The suspected gunman, aged in his 30s, was apprehended shortly after a man was found on central Jerusalem's Hanevi'im Street shortly after 3 A.M. with bullet wounds to the chest.
The gunman told police he was meditating in a public square around 3:30 a.m. when the Arab man approached him, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
Feeling threatened, the gunman opened fire, he told police.
He also told police he shot the Jewish man after the latter asked him for a cigarette, Rosenfeld added.
The suspect also told them that he attempted to shoot a third person during the incident.
According to a Magen David Adom paramedic, the incident at Hanevi'im Street took place at around 3:15 A.M., while the shooting at the old city took place later Tuesday morning.
Both men were shot at close range, the paramedic said.
