Policeman wounded in northern Israel shooting

A policeman was moderately to seriously wounded on Sunday in a shooting in the northern town of Ma'alot. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear.
A Magen David Adom emergency services ambulance took the policeman to a hospital in the nearby city of Nahariya for treatment. He sustained wounds to his limbs in the shooting.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the police officer had attempted to detain a man who he thought displayed suspicious behavior at around 15:00 in the city's Jerusalem Square. The suspect then shot the officer in the stomach and fled the scene.
Eran Shaked, spokesman for the Galilee district police, said the incident was criminally oriented and that the suspect is known to local police.
