Syria said awaiting Israel response on offer to renew talks

Syria has asked the United States to inform Israel it is interested in renewing indirect peace negotiations through Turkish mediation, Israel Radio reported on Tuesday.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davatoglu told U.S. officials during a visit to Washington last week that Damascus wants to pick up dialogue from where the sides left off, according to the radio.
Davatoglu confirmed that Turkey was prepared to resume its role as mediator, and said that Syria was now waiting for a response from Israel.
U.S. special Mideast envoy George Mitchell, who is visiting this week for talks with regional leaders, is planning to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
He is scheduled to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday and will later continue onward to Lebanon and Syria.
Mitchell is expected to raise during his conversations with Israeli officials the possibility of resuming negotiations on the Syrian track. With this in mind, Fred Hoff, Mitchell's chief of staff and a Syria expert, is expected to arrive in Israel, too.
