Jewish community of Turkey has elected the new Chief Rabbi.

                  25.10.2002

Jewish community of Turkey consisting of 25 thousand members has elected the new Chief Rabbi who will govern the Turkish Jewry during seven years. Such honor was rendered to Isaac Khalevy, 62 years old, who graduated from religious Academy in Jerusalem and was teaching Judaism at several Turkish Universities.
Khalevy has substituted the Chief Rabbi David Asseo, died in July at age of 88. Asseo was heading the community for 41 year and he passed through the terrorist act organized by Palestine rebels. In 1986 armed terrorists assaulted the main synagogue of Istanbul during the Saturday mess and killed 22 people. Most of Turkish Jews are descendants of Spanish Jews who left Spain at 1400-1410.
