Britain honors celebrity hairdresser Vidal Sassoon

Britain placed Vidal Sassoon on the Queen's Birthday Honors list Saturday, naming the celebrity hairdresser as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Sassoon, 81, will be awarded the CBE for his services to the British hairdressing industry. During his career, he developed a number of classic hairstyles of the Sixties, as well as a hair care line, range of hair care tools, and chain of salons.
The celebrity hairdresser was born to Jewish parents in London. He spent six years in a Jewish orphanage after his father abandoned the family. In 1948, he joined the Israel Defense Forces to fight in the War of Independence.
In 1982, Sassoon founded the Jerusalem-based Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of anti-Semitism, a research centre devoted to the non-political, interdisciplinary gathering of information about anti-Semitism.
