Israeli Air Force bombs Gaza tunnels
14.06.2009
The Israeli Air Force bombed two smuggling tunnels in Gaza.
The Sunday morning action was "in response to the continuous firing of rockets and mortar shells at Israeli Southern communities from the Gaza Strip," according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces.
A Kassam rocket hit a field in the western Negev Saturday night. No casualties or damage were reported. It was the first cross-border missile attack in four weeks.
No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the attack. A few hours later, on Sunday morning, a bomb was detonated near Israeli troops patrolling Israel's border with the Gaza Strip. In the afternoon, another Kassam rocket struck near Ashkelon, causing no damage or injuries.
About 670 Kassam rockets, mortar shells and long-range Grad missiles have been fired at Israel from Gaza since the beginning of 2008, according to the IDF spokesman's office.
