Ukrainian teacher should be fired, Jewish group says
27.07.2009
A Jewish group is demanding that the Ukrainian government fire a state school teacher guilty of making anti-Semitic slurs.
The Jewish Forum of Ukraine on Wednesday called on the Ministry of Education and Science to fire a Ukrainian public school teacher who was convicted of hate crimes in a Ukrainian municipal court in 2008, but still is teaching children.
Nikolay Yakimchuk, a teacher of Ukrainian language and literature, was charged with ethnic incitement after several students in a state middle school and one teacher testified that he allegedly said during class that “Jews are bad and impudent people,” that Jewish students need to be "exterminated," that they only “take up other people's places at schools that don’t belong to them,” and there should be “no place for them among people.”
A court sentenced Yakimchuk in 2008 to two years in prison, but he was quickly given amnesty and released.
