Controversial settler leader charged over Hebron house evacuation
16.08.2009
Controversial settler leader Daniela Weiss was charged on Sunday with obstructing police officers during the December 2008 evacuation of the so-called "House of Contention" in Hebron.
According to the indictment, police officers approached the former Kedumim mayor during the evacuation and asked her to leave the premises as it was declared a closed military zone.
Weiss she refused to leave the house and proceeded to lay on the floor, which led to her being charged with obstruction.
Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch issued a warrant withholding some of the intelligence-related information in the indictment from publication, on account that it could endanger the lives of several individuals.
Weiss was the only one charged with such offenses in relation to the 2008 Hebron house evacuation.
In response to the charges, Weiss said, "This is Russia. Everyone knows I haven't done anything, but they want to shut my mouth so I can't speak out. That's Bolshevistic."
Weiss's attorney, Naftali Wirtzberger claimed that his client was being "targeted full force. They've been searching for material against her anywhere they could. It's been long since I remember an accusation of this sort was filed."
"Paradoxically, this indictment will do nothing but strengthen her public influence," Wirtzberger added.
