The role of the European Union in settling the situation in the Near East.

The president of Syria Bashar Asad calls the European union to make active its role in settlement of situation in the Near East. During a meeting with the special representative of the European Union on Near-Eastern settlement Miguel Moratinos the Syrian president has emphasized that the European Union can render help in "updating erroneous approaches to this problem".
At the press conference held after the meeting with Bashar Asad the special representative of the European Union has characterized, so-called, "road map" suggested by international mediators as means of achievement peace in the region. "I am here to declare we strive for strong peace and only comprehensive peace can be strong", has noted Moratinos. He also expressed hope for the prompt renewal of negotiations between Arabs and Israel. Among factors which can contribute to renewal of peace Moratinos mentioned forthcoming elections in Israel, reforms of the Palestinian administration and the efforts applied in this field by Security Council of the United Nations.
