The family of the diplomat has lodged a lawsuit against the author of the book about a Japanese diplomat who rescued 10 thousand
12.11.2002 The family of a diplomat has applied to court with the claim against the author of the book about a Japanese diplomat who risked his life to rescue 10 thousand Jews. The book dwells about the Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara who risked his life to rescue 10 thousand Jews from the Holocaust, though the facts about this legendary person are revealed from completely different point of view. The family of the diplomat has applied to court with the claim against the author of the book. Gillel Levin, the professor of religion at Boston University, is accused of causing harm to reputation of Sugihara. Litigation promises to become an outstanding case in Japan where legal claims for slander are extremely rare. They usually speak about Sugihara as about "Japanese Schindler" because, as well as German industrialist Oscar Schindler, he has helped to rescue thousand Jews from nazi death camps and Soviet Gulags. In 1940 he used the position of Vice-Consul in Diplomatic Mission of Japan in the Lithuanian Kaunas to release the sanction about special transit for Jewish families escaping from Poland. His acts substantially remained unrecognized in his own country. However after death of Sugihara in 1986 his life history became known due to reminiscence of his wife Jukiko. There the widow has described how she together with her husband struggled with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to receive visas to Jews.
