Lebanese Ambassador to Canada faced obstruction for anti-Jewish comments.

                  10.01.2003

Canadian authorities have intentions to contact the Government of Lebanon requesting the recall of the Ambassador of this country to Ottawa. "Edmonton Journal" reports that such reaction followed the declaration by Raymond Baaklini that 90% of Canadian mass media belong to Jews and Zionists.
The diplomat decided to show his knowledge of the Canadian mass media market to explain a recent ban of the "Hezbollah" terrorist organization in the country. Nevertheless, his "good knowledge" brought him troubles only.
The declaration by the Lebanese diplomat published in an Arab newspaper, was condemned by Canadian authorities and by Jewish organization alike. Right after the publication had appeared, Baaklini, who has been representing Lebanon in Canada for 2,5 years, was summoned up to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Head of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bill Graham told that the words of the Lebanese Ambassador "provoke extraordinary uneasiness"; he also said that the Ambassador's accusation that the decision to "Hezbollah" had allegedly been taken under the pressure of a certain group had nothing to do with the reality. "The decision to ban "Hezbollah" was taken based on the needs to secure the Canadian citizens", stressed Graham.
