Chief Editor of Ulyanovsk's "Orthodox Simbirsk" is removed and accused of sowing discord between nationalities.

                  10.01.2003

Serguey Seryubin, the former chief editor of Ulyanovsk's "Orthodox Simbirsk" is accused of sowing discord between nationalities. One if the editions of the newspaper contained anti-Semitic materials.
Utro.ru reports, the Region's Office of Public Prosecutor in its press release announces that " Seryubin, using his position, removed the editorial staff people from working on the edition #8 (88) of "Orthodox Simbirsk" newspaper, and then personally prepared and placed anti-Semitic materials in the newspaper".
One of the articles by Seryubin accusing Jews of conspiring to seize power in the world and affirming that killing Christians is a part of the Rabbi teaching was published in the net.
Among the articles, there was also a letter to the famous TV host Victor Shenderovitch, in which Seryubin called for "a mass deportation of the Jews from Russia". This circulation of the Apr.24, 2002 edition was more than 2,000 copies. After the edition was published, Seryubin was removed from the position of "Orthodox Simbirsk" Chief Editor following the pressure exercised by the sponsors, who included the local government.
It is interesting that Seryubin does not feel guilty. "This is a theological dispute", he said in an interview to TBC TV company. "We have our own religion, they have theirs". In such a way, Mr. Seryubin has ascribed anti-Semitic sentiments to the entire Russian Orthodox Church.
The Chief Deputy of the Ulyanovsk's "Shalom" Jewish society Valeriy Rogatkin has said that the initiators of the investigation into Serguey Seryubin's activities are Jewish activists who filed a complaint against him last year. After Seryubin had been removed, publishing of "Orthodox Simbirsk" was resumed. Now, Seryubin is removed, the Jewish community has no claims against the newspaper's content. Rogatkin has pointed out that this case is one of a few when the authorities persecute for anti-Semitic statements.
The Chief Aide to the Public Persecutor of the Region Vasiliy Zima has said that Serguey Seryubin is accused of stimulating national, racial and religious hostility, article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
The preliminary hearings were held at the beginning of January. The court decided to remit the case to the Prosecutor's Office for further inquiry. The trial that has no precedents in Ulyanovsk regions may resume in the mid-February.
