Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJK) presentation in the USA.

                  27.01.2003

The presentation of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress began in the USA on January 27. The press department of the Congress has announced that the leadership of this biggest Jewish organization, uniting the Jewish communities of all the countries of the CIS and the Asian-Pacific region, arrived to New York City to invite the American authorities and public to participate in an international dialogue on decreasing the international tension.
The press department of the EAJC reports that the Delegation of the Congress had several meetings with the NYC Jewish Federation and US Jewish Federation in New York City. The World Jewish Congress's President Edgar Bronfman met with the Congress Delegation. On the same day, the Delegation also met with the Jewish religious leaders of the USA: the rabbi-reformist Amiel Hirshem, his orthodox colleague Arthur Snaier, and the representatives of the COJECO.
A press conference of the EAJC leadership was held on January 28. The press conference was followed by a reception organized in cooperation with the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish American Organizations, the NCSJ, and the World Jewish Congress. On January 29, the Delegation arrived in Washington, D.C., where the delegates met with the US National Security Advisor-Depute Steve Hadley and the Aide to the State Department Secretary on European and Eurasian Issues Elizabeth Jones.
Then, the Delegation visited the US Congress where it met with the Congressmen-Jews and the Senators Brownback, Shapiro, and Hilary Clinton. The contacts with the American public ended with the speeches by the leadership of the EAJC during the meeting with the representatives of the Jewish mass media of the USA in the National Press Club and during a reception in the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Washington. The heads of the biggest Jewish American organizations, such as the AJC, Bnay Brit, the UCSJ, Washington D.C. Jewish Federation, the NCSJ and others, were invited to the reception.
The EAJC President Alexander Mashkevich said that the Embassy of Kazakhstan was chosen to end the presentation not only because the HQ of the Congress are situated in Almaty. In such a manner, the EAJC wanted to honor the Kazakhstan's key role in the Jewish-Muslim and Middle East dialogues.
The President of the Congress thinks that the visit to the USA will serve as a preparation for the International Conference on Peace and Harmony, to take place in Astana, February 12-13, 2003. Invited by President Nazarbayev, the heads of all Central Asian states will come to the capital of Kazakhstan. They, as well as the representatives of the Congress and the delegation of the leaders of American Jewry which will include members of the US House of Representatives and the Congress, will sign the Peace and Harmony Charter. Mr. Mashkevich thinks that, if Kazakhstan has risked making such a step in such a tense international situation, its initiative should be backed not only by EAJC, but also by the entire Jewry.
