Regularly scheduled convention on aliah and Jewish education held in the Georgian capital.

                  27.01.2003

More than eighty envoys of the Jewish agency to the CIS and Easter Europe, as well as the representatives of the leadership of the Zionist organizations gathered, last week, in the Georgian capital for the regularly scheduled convention dedicated to the problems of aliah and Jewish education. The participants of the convention discussed the plans for the upcoming year and determined the most important objectives the Jewish agency envoys should take care of. The problems important for the potential repatriates, such as the Repatriation Law debate in the Israeli society, the demographic and economic situations of Israel, were also discussed.
During the work of the convention, the "Hai" centre ("The Centre of Eighteen") was officially opened. The center is named in honor of the eighteen Jewish families of Georgia who in the early 70s anxiously addressed the UN requesting help to make the Soviet authorities let them leave for Israel. The new center will house many projects by the Jewish agency in Tbilisi. The participants visited the beautiful Tbilisi synagogue. The treasurer of the Jewish agency Shay Hermesh greeted local Jews and was greeted in return by the head of the community for the activities the Jewish agency does in Georgia.
The official meeting between the convention participants and the members of the government of the republic took place on the final day of the convention. The government official mentioned the contribution of the Jewish agency to establishing and developing friendly relations between the two countries. The convention ended with a festive dinner, during which the envoys that had been extremely successful in their work were given diplomas. Among the laureates were Ran Ezer, the Head of the Yekaterinburg office of the Jewish agency; Shlomo Neeman, the responsible for the Jewish education and the strengthening of the national self-consciousness in Ukraine and Moldova; and Shlomo Azarov, the Agency's representative in Kazakhstan.
