The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is seeking for several weeks the Turkmenistan authority permission to repatriate a Turkm

                  06.02.2003

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been pressing the Turkmen authorities for several weeks to get permission for a Turkmen army major's family to be repatriated to Israel. The army major is accused of being involved into a coup attempt against President Niyasov.
The major, a Jew, is reported to have attracted the security services' attention right after the attempt. Unable to detain the suspected serviceman, the Turkmen authority arrested his mother and sister, thus hoping to make the major return to the country.
Right after the arrest, the relatives living in Israel contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting help in the family's reunification. The arrested were released and now are awaiting the permission to leave for Israel. At the instance of the people concerned, no names are divulged.
