The Russian Jewish Congress expresses deep indignation over the speech of the CPRF leader.

                  07.02.2003

The Russian Jewish Congress has made the following mass media statement:
A statement of the Russian Jewish Congress following Genadiy Zyuganov's opinion on the "Jewish issue".
The Russian Jewish Congress expresses deep indignation over the speech by the CPRF leader Genadiy Zyuganov at a session of the all-Russian workshop-conference of the CPRF regional pre-election HQ leaders. As "Commersant" newspaper announced in the February 6 edition, in his report the CPRF leader touched upon the "Jewish issue" saying that recently there had been a "scandalous nationality careen" in the authority staff. We can consider the declaration of the kind by a prominent politician only as stirring hatred towards the Jews.
We are especially indignant over Zuganov's attempt to cause a clash between the Russian Jewish community and Moscow vice-mayor Valeriy Shantsev, one of the capital's best politicians. According to the CPRF leader's words, "the attack on the Shantsev's group" is yet another manifestation of the "nationality careen": being "the most educated and skilled" Moscow politician, Shantsev is "not convenient for the oligarchs".
The RJC leadership declares that it had and has close ties with the Government of Moscow; and that it is respectful to Valeriy Shantsev personally.
We find it necessary to point out that the Jewish community of Saint Petersburg cooperates constrictively with the Government of the city, no matter the "attacks" on the mayor of the Northern capital Vladimir Yakovlev that Zuganov talks about.
The Russian Jewish Congress hopes that the declaration by the CPRF leader will be duly evaluated by the public and the law.
