Selection of old maps of Jerusalem will enrich Internet.

                  19.02.2003

Internet has been enriched with the selection of 250 old maps of Jerusalem, each one being a masterpiece itself. All the maps placed in the site come from the Eran Laor Map collection, which was donated to the National and University library of Jewish University in Jerusalem in 1975. The Eran Laor Map collection is one of the most exhaustive and valuable ones in the world.
In addition to the maps, the site contains an introductory article, bibliography, information on other map collections, chronologies, and addresses of other topic related sites. The virtual gallery, visiting which the Internet users will be able to study in detail every map placed, is of indubitable interest to scientists and the general public alike. To visit the new site, go to: http://maps-of-jerusalem.huji.ac.il
The oldest map in the selection dates back to 1486; the most "up-to-date" one was made at the begging of the 20th century. The director of the National and University library Yoram Zafrir says that Jerusalem is probably the only city in the world that has been and is studied extremely closely and repeatedly by cartographers. The creators of the site are planning to extend it by adding exhibits from local and foreign collections.
