US Council recommends to increase the Jewish refugee quota.

                  20.02.2003

In its statement, the Council points out that numerous Turkmen officials, politicians, public and religious figures, in their speeches and materials in the press, call the Jews one of the reasons for the country's political, economical and social problems. The Jews are discriminated against when accepted to work or enrolled into studies, their nationality being the reason. Some Jews have been moved by the Turkmen authorities into a non-lived-in region of the country near the border with Kazakhstan. The level of anti-Semitism in everyday life is even higher.
Thereupon, the US Council on Refugees recommends that the US State Department increase the quota for the Jewish refugees from Turkmenistan.
