Numerous repatriates wishing to complete giur.

                  24.02.2003

The Jewish agency's board session is currently held in Jerusalem in the net of the plenary session of the JA Trusteeship council. The topic of yesterday's extraordinary session was the giur for new repatriates.
One million repatriates have arrived in Israel from the former USSR over the past ten years. This includes 250,000 people not considered to be Jews by the Galaha. These are people allowed to repatriate under the Repatriation Law. The majority of them want to incorporate into the Jewish nation. They follow Israeli lifestyle, consider themselves to be a part of Jewish society; many of them have expressed the desire to complete the giur. However, there are obstacles, including serious ones.
The Jewish agency asks the government of Israel to solve immediately the problem of newly arrived repatriates integration into Israeli society and to find a solution for all those wishing to complete the giur under the Jewish Galaha.
