Australian Foreign Office urged all Australians to leave Israel as the tension in the Middle East increases.

                  09.03.2003

The Australian Foreign Office urged all the Australians residing in or visiting Israel to leave the country. The Foreign Office document reads that due to the growing tensions in Israel and in the Middle East, all the Australian citizens have to postpone all unnecessary trips to the region. The Australians currently staying in Israel are suggested to leave the country, if they have no urgent need to stay longer. Australians staying in the West Bank of Jordan river and in Gaza area are recommended to leave immediately, while it is still possible. The families of all Australian diplomats in Israel have been urged to leave the country by the middle of the next week.
The Foreign Office representatives say that the personnel evacuation has been triggered not only by the pending threat of Iraq's attacking Israel if the war starts, by also by the growing tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and, in case of war, the intentions of the Israeli authorities to proclaim the "territories" closed military zone.
