Sydney: meeting between the leaders of the Australian Jewish community and the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia

                  12.03.2003

The primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia Archbishop Stilianos met the leaders of the Australian Jewish community, in his office in Sydney.
Jeremy Jones, the President of the Executive Council of the Australian Jews (ECAJ), a member of the General Council of the Euro-Asian Jewish Council (EAJC); Raymond Apple, the rabbi of the Big Synagogue of Sidney; and Josey Leisy, the Honorary Secretary of the ECAJ, had requested to be received, because the Jewish community of Australia is concerned with the Archbishop's 2002 Christmas address, in which the Jews were mentioned.
Having listened to the Archbishop's explanations regarding the wording of the address, the Jewish leaders agreed that the address had been written in the spirit of self-criticism of all those to whom the ideas stated in the Bible are of concern. The Archbishop confirmed his friendliness towards the Jewish community and expressed his deep solidarity with Jewish spirituality.
The climate of the meeting was warm and constructive. All the participants agreed that the Greek Orthodox and Jewish communities should continue discussing issues of mutual concern and use the fruit of many decades of cooperation to solve problems.
