A new synagogue building opened last week in the downtown Baku.

The opening of a beautiful building of the synagogue in the downtown Baku at the beginning of March has been a surprise not only because of its solemnity, but also because of the number of VIPs present. Besides high ranking officials, the members of Milli-Midgelis, diplomats, and heads of religious confessions, the event in Baku was attended by almost all the rabbis and leaders of the Jewish communities of the CIS, people of culture and art, and prominent businesspeople.
The author of the project of the synagogue is Alexander Garber. The new building was built on the site of the old synagogue, which premises were handed over to the Jewish community in 1946. It took only a year to build the praying halls, back rooms, library, study rooms, and a kitchen.
The famous actor Genadiy Hazanov did not conceal his admiration provoked by the beauty of the building. "What is more important is that the synagogue is opened. This is the triumph of wisdom, peaceable disposition, and kind-heartedness of the Azerbaijan people and their President Geidar Aliyev. Nowadays, when the opposition between ethnics, nations and religions is building up; when terrorism is being given a religious slant, this event is yet another proof of the Azerbaijan people's mercifulness and openness. May God help these people to prosper!"- summed up Hazanov.
