In Sydney, vandals tried to set a synagogue on fire.

                  25.03.2003

Vandals profaned the South Sydney Synagogue, Australia. The President of the South Sydney Synagogue David Schmuel has said that the vandals poured kerosene all over the synagogue's walls and then tried to set the building on fire. Fortunately, no ignition followed. The darkened walls are the only damage. The arson attempt was made at night, when there was no one inside.
The South Sydney Community is the city's smallest one, with only 150 members. Situated near an Arab neighborhood, the synagogue has been profaned on several occasions in the past years. During the 1991 Gulf war, the synagogue was slightly damaged by the fire caused by a Molotov cocktail.
Following the latest attempt, the community was obliged to hire a guard.
