"Holocaust Challenge and Its Lessons" Forum to be held in Lvov.

                  27.03.2003

The International "Holocaust Challenge and Its Lessons" forum, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Yanovskiy concentration camp in Lvov, will be held this November. The President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, the Chief of the President Administration Victor Medvedchuk and other high ranking officials are expected to participate in the forum.
It was announced at the Schwartz Memorial "Holocaust" International Centre that "Lvov is the place to hold a forum of the kind, for it is the site of the Yanovskiy concentration camp, the biggest camp in Ukraine. More than 200,000 Jews, Ukrainians, Polish, and people of other nationalities were imprisoned and killed there."
According to the data by the "Holocaust" Centre, the tragedy of the Yanovskiy concentration camp can only be surpassed by that of Babiy Yar. The Yanovskiy concentration camp is the only former camp of such dimensions where there is no memorial to the tortured and killed. its territory is still being used by a police unit. The objective of this social and political move is to "improve the image of Ukraine on the international scene and stress the willingness of Ukraine to follow the principles of international peace", reads the statement by the "Holocaust" Centre.
