The Jewish school of Baku to finally get a license.
10.04.2003 At a meeting with the representatives of the Jewish communities of the former USSR in Moscow, the President of Azerbaijan Geydar Aliev has promised that the Jewish school, functioning in Baku for more than eighteen months now but having no license, will soon be officially registered by the authorities.
The leaders of the Ashkenazi community of Azerbaijan called the day they met with President Aliev "the great day". They said, "From now on, our school will finally function normally".
The ceremony of official opening of the school, which is already attended by about a hundred children, is scheduled for September 1 of this year. President Aliev is expected to take park in the ceremony.
It may seen a paradox, but the long lasted indecisiveness of the Azerbaijani authorities about recognizing the existence of the school is explained by the fear of growing fundamentalism sentiments in this Muslim nation.
Currently, the Jewish population of this predominantly Muslim Shiite state is 20,000 people.
