A sensation in the Armenian village.

                  11.04.2003

An ancient Jewish cemetery was found in Eghekhis, a village in Vayots Dzor district of Armenia, during the archeological dig conducted in the region. The necropolis dates back to the middle of the 13th century, the tombstone inscriptions are in Ancient Jewish. The scientist hold this discovery a sensation, for the farewell words on tombstones are, as a rule, written in the language of the country of residence. The head of the Armenian side participating in the expedition, the Chief Research Assistant of the Archeology and Ethnography Institute of the National Academy of Science Ussik Melkonyan told in an interview to RUJEN that "the discovery is a total surprise to us, and it promises a lot". A group of Israeli scientists participating in the excavations is headed by the Head of the Armenian studies department of the University of Jerusalem Michael Stone. He finances all the excavation works from the money received to conduct lectures on the history of Armenian-Jewish relations.
