Organization created in Moldova may become influential force.
02.06.2003 The First Convention of the Jewish Congress of Moldova was held in Kishinev. The elected Chairman of the Congress, Alexander Pinchevskiy, a successful businessman, pointed out in his program speech that the new organization is meant to stay out of politics. The Congress will initiate programs aimed at improving the conditions of the 30.000-strong Jewish community of Moldova; assist in creating working places for Jews; help the elderly and the needy; and contribute to developing Jewish culture. Currently, tasks are mostly carried out by the American "Joint" organization and several Israeli organizations. Jewish business contributions to the budget of Moldova is 6.2%. The observers, nevertheless, point out that the organization created by Jewish businesspeople may well become an influential force on the political scene of the country.
