The World Jewish Congress has asked the UN to recognize Jews forced out of Arab countries as refugees.

The World Jewish Congress has asked the UN to recognize Jews forced out of Arab countries as refugees of similar status to Palestinian refugees. WJC director general Avi Becker said the UN should follow the Council of Europe, which two months ago called for a solution to the Palestinian problem via the countries where they settled. The WJC wants far-reaching changes in UNRWA, saying it perpetuates the Palestinian refugee problem. Israel opposes scrapping UNRWA lest it be forced to become responsible for the problem.
