Holocaust and Armenian Genocide Victims Honored in Yerevan
30.04.2014, Community Life On April 28, the Armenian Jewish community gathered for a memorial rally near the Memorial to Victims of the Holocaust and Armenian Genocide, which had been erected in the center of Yerevan in 2006. Wreaths and flowers were laid at the memorial by community members and guests who came to honor the memory of the 6 000 000 innocent victims. Chairman of the Armenian Jewish community, Euro-Asian Jewish Congress General Council member Rimma Varjapetyan opened the rally with a speech. Then Chief Rabbi of Armenia Gersh Burstein lighted 6 commemorative candles in honor of the 6 million who were killed In the fire of the Catastrophe and then read a prayer for the dead.
Among those who spoke at the rally were “Menorah” Cultural Center Willie Weiner, Armenian government representative Nara Gulyan, Polish community representative Anna Akolyan, and writer Anna Mikaelyan, who read poetry by Mark Chagall. The speeches were accompanied by Ovik Papayan, a member of the Jewish community, who played music from “Schindler's List” movie on the violin. A large group of school students from Yerevan also came to lay wreaths at the memorial.
