                  31.08.2015, Ukraine

On September 27, 2015, the delegation of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) met with representatives of Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Security Services. The delegation consisted of WJC CEO Robert Singer (USA), WJC Chief Operating Officer, Protocol, Governance & Communications John Malkinson (Belgium), and WJC Executive Office Assistant David Meluskey.

WJC Vice Presidents Andrey Adamovsky and Boris Fuchsmann, Jewish Confederation of Ukraine Executive Director Inna Yoffe, as well as the chairman of the General Council of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, Josef Zissels, were also present at the meeting with Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Tigran Avakyan and Head of the MIA International Relations Department Mary Akopyan.

Tigran Avakyan stressed that the Jewish community is an integral part of the ethnic mosaic of Ukraine and that it would be impossible to uphold harmony in society without it. The deputy minister assured the delegation that he devotes special attention to any and all incidents of anti-Semitism and xenophobia, doing everything within his power to prevent such incidents and making sure that criminal investigations already in process are completed successfully.

The parties involved matters of strengthening security for the Jewish community and places of Jewish pilgrimage, communicating directly with the newly-created Security Department of the WJC, and working together to commemorate the 75-year anniversary of the tragedy at Babiy Yar.

Then the delegation headed to the Central Office of the Ukrainian Security Service, where there was a meeting with the First Deputy of the SSU Head Victor Trepak. The discussion concerned the safety level of the Jewish communities and places of mass Jewish pilgrimage in Ukraine. The parties placed a great deal of importance on evaluating whether international terrorism is a threat in Ukraine. Victor Trepak assured the delegates that the SSU has the safety of the Jewish community under rigorous control and that it has been successfully blocking international terroristic organizations' attempts to act in Ukraine.
