The Secretary General of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) Michael Chlenov has taken part in the solemn opening ceremony of the Holocaust Victim Remembrance Week, which has been timed to coincide with the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 72 anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red Army.

The series of commemorative events opened with the exhibition “Holocaust: destruction, liberation, rescue” at the Cultural Center of the Main Administration for Service to the Diplomatic Corps (GlavUpDK) in Moscow. The event was organized by the Russian Jewish Congress.
Among the guests of honor at the opening ceremony were Russia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov, the recently-appointed Ambassador of Israel in Russia Gary Koren, ambassadors and diplomats from Belarus, Austria, Germany and other countries, RJC President Yuri Kanner, representatives of Jewish religious and community organizations. The exhibition presented over 70 unique photos, documents and drawings, taken from archives and foundations in Russia, Ukraine, France and Switzerland.

“It is especially important that this exhibition will also be shown in a number of foreign states, in UN states,” Sergey Lavrov noted in his speech. “I am certain this will aid in the preservation of historic memory of the horrible events of those years, and that it will serve as a reminder of the act of heroism of all of the peoples of the former Soviet Union. Our ministry is ready to provide all support to make this important and relevant initiative. We are ready to continue further work with Jewish organizations both with Russia and beyond its borders.”
