On June 14-15, 2015, the Department of Philology of the Maimonides State Classic Academy (Dean - Euro-Asian Jewish Congress Secretary General, professor Michael Chlenov) hosted the international conference “Jewish Studies in Modern Education.”

Over two days of fruitful work, scholars and teachers from Russia and Israel discussed various aspects of teaching subjects connected to Jewish history and culture both in a formal and informal educational context. Some reports and discussions concerned museum studies and using library resources well. Significant time was also devoted to presenting various educational programs and publications; particularly, “Canaanites: The Jews in A Medieval Slavic World” - a book edited by Michael Chlenov and published with EAJC support.

EAJC Secretary General Michael Chlenov commented upon the event: “The conference brought together scholars of Jewish studies from different educational institutions, whether Jewish or non-Jewish, private or state-funded. They exchanged experience, shared their problems, and, in the end, the participants were able to form a broad and adequate map of how Jewish Studies are currently being taught on all educational levels, from the school to the university. It turned out that the situation was not at all bad. I believe such conferences to be extremely useful, and I hope that we will find ways to support them.”
